Plexiglass Acrylic Sheet - UV Filtering
Ultraviolet plexiglass sheet formulations reduce damaging UV light waves.
Within the Ultraviolet Spectrum, UVB (short wavelength high frequency) & UVA (long wavelength low frequency) are the two types of UV light that most concern us. Referencing the table below, general purpose acrylic naturally filters all UV light below 345nm (100% UVB), but only 35% of UVA light. Simliarly, ordinary window glass passes about 90% of the light above 350nm, but blocks over 90% of the light below 300nm. Many applications, such as document, artifact, and artwork preservation call for a material which absorbs ultraviolet light in its most damaging range from 285nm to 400nm.
Many pigments and dyes absorb UV and change color, so paintings and textiles may need extra protection both from sunlight and fluorescent bulbs, two common sources of UV radiation. Old paintings such as watercolors must be placed away from direct sunlight if they do not have UV protection. These factors are why many museums place black curtains over watercolor paintings and ancient textiles.
UV FILTERING PLEXIGLASS ACRYLIC SHEET OP3/UF-5 Acrylite® UV filtering (OP-3) acrylic sheet protects from both natural and artificial light. Acrylite® UV filtering (OP-3) is a continuously manufactured acrylic sheet which filters out 98 percent of damaging UV rays, protecting paper artwork, prints, and documents from fading, yellowing, and brittling. OP-3 acrylic sheet is light weight, has superior impact resistance and is an ideal choice for framing articles of value.
UV FILTERING MUSEUM GRADE PLEXIGLASS ACRYLIC SHEET OP2/UF-3 UV Filtering OP-2 Acrylite®/UF-3 Plexiglas® acrylic cell cast sheet is the clear choice for museum vitrines. Easily fabricated, edges can be cut and cemented for strong nearly invisible joints. It can be thermoformed, cold-formed, screen printed and painted. This product is also available with an abrasion and chemical resistant coating upon request. ePlastics® stocks UV Filtering plexiglass in 1/8" and 1/4" thickness for protecting fine art and building custom museum vitrines.
UV FILTERING NON-GLARE PLEXIGLASS ACRYLIC SHEET OP3 P99 Acrylite® Non Glare P99 UV filtering acrylic sheet is manufactured to minimize glare and reflection and maximize viewing of artwork and other articles of value. This special matte finish can show off artwork from almost any angle under typical lighting conditions. Non Glare UV filtering P99 acrylic holds the same absorbing properties as the OP-2&3 UV filtering sheet, but adds an anti-glare functionality.
UV TRANSMITTING PLEXIGLASS ACRYLIC SHEET OP4*(special order) Acrylite® OP4 UV Transmitting acrylic sheet is manufactured for use in indoor sun tanning equipment. It offers high levels of UV light transmission and strong resistance to degradation caused by UV light. OP-4 acrylic sheet transmits a high percentage of UVA and UVB light. Only a small portion of light in the UVC region (200 – 280 nm) is transmitted.
The UV filtering properties of Acrylite® OP & Plexiglas® UF are not an exterior coating, but inherent properties of the resin-and therefore will not wear off or degrade. Our OP3 meets and exceeds ASTM D 4802.1/8" = .118" = 3mm | 1/2" = .472" = 12mm |
3/16" = .177" = 4.5mm
| 3/4" = .708" = 18mm |
1/4" = .236" = 6mm
| 1" = .944" = 24mm |
3/8" = .354" = 9mm | |
Thickness tolerances are +/- 10% on acrylic sheets and can vary throughout the sheet. Normally we see variations less than 5%. Sheets sizes can vary from the manufacturer and some are cut from larger sheets. Because of this, the sheet dimensions are nominal and might be +/- saw cut.
